In 1942, Bing Crosby was joined by numerous Hollywood performers during a Hollywood Victory Caravan, a fundraiser for World War II servicemen. They shared an avid interest in betting at the Del Mar racetrack, where they first got to know one another. Crosby was an owner of the track and Hardy made an appearance with him in Riding High (1950), which was filmed there.

Of course, Oliver Hardy is inseparably identified with Stan Laurel as the comedy duo of Laurel & Hardy, which began with silents in the late 1920s, hitting peak in the 1930s with the Hal Roach Studios, which also did the Our Gang comedy shorts.
